I keep seeing references to the IPN testing tip, to wit, set the "return" URL to my ipn script and see the FORM variables.

1. Where will I see these FORM variables: on the actual page, in the address bar or under View Source?

2. Am I looking for this information on a Paypal payment page or on the script page I am using?

Thanks.

You can a) see the actual FORM variables with "View Source" when you are at the last PayPal page (the one with the "Continue" button) and B) press the "Continue" button to actually POST the IPN variables to your script just as they are POSTed to your Notification URL.

Some developers find this an easier way to test because you can output information or error messages to the browser window.

You can create your own PayPal link/button or use this one:
https://www.paypal.c...ite.com/ipn.asp

Just change "return" to your IPN script.

What does it mean when no variables are passed. I get a good ipn.asp page (no errors) but when I View Source, it just says:

<html>
<head>
<title>IPN</title>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
</head>

<body>
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Process Subscription Payments
</font>
</body>
</html>

If you are using Subscriptions, you will not be able to View Source.

If you are using Shopping Cart or Single Item Purchase, you can View Source on the last PayPal page that says "You have made a payment", not on the ipn.asp page.

Thanks. How do I troubleshoot my subscriptions throwing off multiple email confirmation?

Am I correct the multiple confirmations are because

if (objHttp.status <> 200 ) then
' HTTP error handling
elseif (objHttp.responseText = "VERIFIED") then
' check that Payment_status=Completed
' check that Txn_id has not been previously processed
' check that Receiver_email is an email address in your PayPal account
' process payment

is throwing errors?

Possibly, but the error could be elsewhere in your script as well.

If you are using .htaccess/.htpasswd to control user access, you should consider using our Password Management service which handles all of the billing and activating/deactiviating users from the password file. We can even install it for you if desired.

OK, then this would be an alternative to Shannon's subscription script? I kind of liked his script because it was all in VB Script running off .asp pages. Plus I've put over 2 weeks into it. Is he the only one who can troubleshoot this?

The Password Management service is for UNIX and Linux environments. It unfortunately does not work on Microsoft.

You'll need to contact Shannon about the script you are using.
