From the paypal.com site
payment_gross: Transaction specific
Full USD amount of the customer's payment, before transaction fee is subtracted. Will be empty for non-USD payments. This is a legacy field replaced by "mc_gross"

If a customer is paying in pounds or euros how do I check if what they are paying is correct?? I am using a single purchase button and want to check that they are paying the 'correct' amount for my product!!!

Or is it just some outdated info from the paypal site.

For USD, you can continue checking "payment_gross".

For multi-currency (which is not currently supported with Single Item Purchase buttons) you can check "mc_gross" and "mc_currency". You can check this out now using "Send Money" if you'd like. Once multi-currency SIP is ready, it will work in the same fashion.
