Using HTML Single Item Purchase, How do I pass variables
(key data, not to be viewed by customer) to PayPal that
will be returned when PayPal return to my designated
thankyou.htm or cancel.htm page(s)?

Example: I need to pass the customer number and order number
along with PayPal's required data and have the
customer number and order number returned.

Thanks for any help that you can provide.

PayPal offers several "pass-through" variables that do this:

"item_number" is a good for passing a cusomter ID.

"invoice" is good to use if you are generating your own unique order ID. It must be unique as teh PayPal system will enforce uniqueness.

"custom" is good for miscellaneous data that you do not want the buyer to see.

The two optional fields can be used if you want to specify the label of the data.

I just tried using the variable item_number on my thank you confirmation page after posting it as a form variable, and received an error message as if item_number didn't exist. Is the variable returned as "item_number"?

I know that all of my other variables were posted correctly because they showed up in the forms, but this is the only variable that I need to pass through and use on the thank you page.

Yes, it'll be "item_number" in the IPN.

Oh, thanks. I did not realize from your online guides that I also had to use IPN - I thought that the pass through variables worked with the single cart purchase automatically.

By the way, thanks for the link to the Cold Fusion IPN tutorial. It made it much easier to set up the system, and the variables are now being passed as I had expected.
