I am planning to used the Perl script based system offered by paypal for my subscription based website. Has anyone used this system before? Is there a site where it has been implimented?

More information on the system can be found at: https://www.paypal.c...nstallation.pdf

I have a few questions about Basic Authentication.

Firstly, Does the user have to type thier password
every page they view or just once to open the
directory?

Can any type of file be be protected? (asp, html, pdf,
ect.)

How secure is it?

What is invoved in installing the script? Can I just use any Apache server on the internet? Do in need to be running Linix on my machine to set it up or can I just upload it as it is supplied to a web host?

How complicated is it to set this system up?

Is there anything I should know before trying to use this system.

Thanks for your help,
Ed

One directory on your site is protected. It's secure. Subscribers need enter the username/password once per browser session. Some browsers save the username and password for the user.

It's somewhat involved because several paths have to be specified and permissions set. LWP::UserAgent for PERL is required.

It should work on any Unix/Linux installation running Apache.

Might have a look at mollyguard.com/access which performs installations.

By going through the user guide set by set and using a telnet/ssh client to access the command line would it be possible to set up the system or is it more complicated and problematic than this.

Do you think a person that is very computer literate but has had no experience in Perl could set it up?

Is LWP::UserAgent to connect to the secure server? Does this just need to be installed on the host?

Many Thanks for your help

You can do everything with SSH, telnet ot FTP.

LWP::UserAgent is necessary to connect to the server. SSL would be ncessary to connect securely which is not required.

The key isn't PERL, it's Unix file systems, paths and permissions.
